Before we start discussing how to save money, you need to consider why you might want to. Saving money in your home-based business has many advantages:
- You do not have to earn as much to keep your business solvent. Failure to turn a profit causes thousands of businesses to fold every year. If your overhead is low, you can keep operating even if you are just starting out or have seasonal lulls.
- You have the option of working less. For instance, Jay has been working only three days a week since 1971.
- You can accept projects that you enjoy that may not pay as well as others. When your expenses are few, you have the freedom to work when and on what you want.
- You can invest in expansion, improvements, or new markets. The less it costs your business to run, the more discretion you have for allocating funds in new areas or on new equipment.
- And, of course, you get to keep more of what you earn. The higher your profit margin is, the bigger salary you can take.
“Evaluate all your options before doing anything. There is usually a way you can do it better or cheaper or get by with what you currently have.”
